Otherwise, the myriad of all the next new things look beautiful like a Christmas tree, but will not result in improvement. Issues we face are complex, and take perseverance and persistence to work through. Michael Fullan notes that one of the wrong drivers for improved outcomes is fragmented strategies (the next new things). Some of the right drivers that he suggests are capacity building, quality of the group, and systemness. These foundational approaches hold true and can be applied to individual and system growth. I too am bothered by how some educators (& non-educators) judge our kids & label them as though they are pre-determined to arrive at a particular point because of past history. Every child will require a fresh start many times throughout their school experience. If we can stay focused on long term rather than short term results, we may find ourselves pleasantly surprised. Many a child has grown into a wonderful adult we can be proud of. The question is, will be give them a chance to be the first rather than the next. - God bless my friend! - jimmyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6363196304890030191.post-9533469894296571732014-02-14T22:16:52.786-06:002014-02-14T22:16:52.786-06:00Thanks, Dan! I think we get so stuck on the product...thinking curriculum saves schools or test scores save kids...if we have a process that looks at assessment and grows teacher capacity we will be in a much better place. "The next" can never be done because no one can have the same skill set as the next person. That's what makes each of us unique. Even twins aren't identical. We must use the talents we have, develop them further, and add new talents when possible.
Thanks for the thought provoking post.
JayJay Posickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17260044239477784440noreply@blogger.com
